Neat: St. Charles County student wins national penmanship title

Penmanship; they still teach that?

Not only is it still taught, 10-year-old Maggie Hartman of O'Fallon, Mo., actually excels at it.

Maggie, a fourth-grader at Immaculate Conception of Dardenne in St. Charles County, won the national title for her grade in the 2019 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest.

Maggie was required to write, in cursive, the classic typing-class sentence, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

Judges then graded the entry on shape, size, spacing and slant. Nine national winners, kindergarten through eighth grade, were named out of about 250,000 contestants.

The daughter of Alana and Nathan Hartman, Maggie earned a trophy and $500. The school also will receive $500 worth of educational materials.
