St. Louis Post-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee Canceled

April 24, 2020

The Scripps National Spelling Bee made the announcement today to cancel the 2020 national finals due to the ongoing concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus and uncertainty around when public gatherings will be possible or advisable.

In response, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has also decided to cancel our final bee. This was an incredibly hard decision but one we needed to make for the health and well-being of everyone involved. We are not alone in this, as more than 90 local sponsors nationwide were not able to complete their final local bees this spring. You can read the official Scripps statement here:

We empathize with all our finalists, including our 11 eighth graders whose last chance it was to participate in the bee. As such, we plan on honoringĀ and recognizing all our 36 finalists in-paper and on in the coming weeks. Additionally, each will receive their finalist ribbon in the mail. I will let you know more on details through a separate email in the next few days.

Thank you for your understanding through these hard choices this year.
