CHAMPAIGN, Ill. • The University of Illinois is considering an expansion of its solar farm.

The University of Illinois South Farms has been idle since October when on-site electrical system issues occurred, The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported. But it's scheduled to resume operations soon.

University officials have discussed expanding the 21-acre solar farm to help meet renewable-energy goals outlined in the Illinois Climate Action Plan, known as iCAP.

With the help of some recent big gifts and positive trends in the market, the University of Missouri-Columbia hit a new milestone: Its endowment reached $1 billion.

A hearty endowment makes universities look good when they’re competing for top faculty who are going to bring in grant money, as well as for top students.

It’s all about competition, and for a while, some other universities have had an advantage over Mizzou, according to Tom Hiles, vice chancellor for advancement.

UMSL recently started UMSL NOW — nights, online and weekends — which is an office focused solely on the needs of the many students who operate on non-traditional college schedules.

Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the first African-American woman to travel into space, will be in STL on Wednesday.

Jemison, who now serves as an ambassador for Bayer U.S. "Making Science Make Sense" program, will appear from 10 a.m. to noon at the St. Louis Science Center's McDonnell Planetarium.

She will speak to third- and fourth-grade students about her journey from inner-city Chicago to being part of the Space Shuttle Endeavor crew in September 1992. Her current mission is to encourage young students, especially girls, to embrace science and math classes.

Four St. Louis area schools earned the National Blue Ribbon honor this year.

They are:

• Mallinckrodt Academy of Gifted Instruction, St. Louis Public Schools

• Mark Twain Elementary, Brentwood School District

• Chesterfield Elementary, Rockwood School District

• Rogers Elementary, Waterloo School District

The U.S. Department of Education awards the title each year to select schools for high academic performance or progress in closing the achievement gap among racial and socioeconomic minorities.
