Lindenwood University's new $24.5 million library and academic resource center opened this weekend after more than two years of construction.

The new three-story, 100,000 square-foot library on the university's St. Charles campus replaces the 36,000 square-foot Butler Library, built in 1929. Many of Lindenwood's student services will also be based in the new building, including the writing center, veteran services, student and academic support services and career counseling.

St. Louis already has one pre-eminent research university — and it’s not the one located on Grand Boulevard.

Ken Olliff wants that to change.

“St. Louis needs two great research universities,” says the recently hired vice president for research at St. Louis University.

Olliff is in charge of SLU’s campaign to build itself into one of them, with the ultimate goal of positioning the soon-to-be 200-year-old institution as one of the world’s premier Jesuit research universities.

Step one: Double SLU’s research budget to $100 million over the next five years.

Missouri music teacher Tracy King’s second job began about two decades ago with one problem: She couldn’t find any useful educational materials to put on her classroom bulletin board.

So she started making her own. After a few years doing that, other teachers started asking her to make some for them, too.

Then, in 2006, an online marketplace called Teachers Pay Teachers launched, allowing teachers like King to sell resources they make to teachers anywhere.

ST. LOUIS • University of Missouri-Columbia leaders celebrated a $21.6 million gift to the journalism school Friday — the sixth-largest donation in the flagship campus’ history according to campus leaders.

The massive gift comes from David Novak, a co-founder and recently retired chief executive for Yum! Brands, the umbrella company for Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut.

The donation will create a Novak Leadership Institute within the School of Journalism.

ST. LOUIS • Northwest Missouri State University announced a new program Thursday from which students have already started to reap rewards.

The program, called the American Dream Grant, covers 100 percent of tuition and fees for students who are eligible for federal need-based financial aid.
