One month before the first day of school, thousands of students in Kirkwood and St. Louis learned they will be staying home.

Kirkwood is the sixth school district in St. Louis County to move to an all-virtual start to the 2020-2021 year, following Affton, Ferguson-Florissant, Hazelwood, Maplewood-Richmond Heights and Ritenour. Most other districts in the region released back-to-school plans on July 20, offering at least two days of in-person classes along with all-virtual options.

Six more school systems across St. Louis on Wednesday joined the growing list of area districts that will start the school year with virtual instruction.

The Clayton, Parkway, Pattonville and Webster Groves districts in St. Louis County and KIPP and Lift for Life charter schools in St. Louis said they will offer online-only classes for the first quarter of the 2020-2021 year.

The Illinois High School Association unveiled its plan for sports in the 2020-21 school year Wednesday afternoon. It does not include a fall football season as the state and nation continue to navigate the coronavirus pandemic that has uprooted the norms of everyday life the last five months.

When NASA launched its spacecraft to Mars shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday, one of the hands guiding the tiller belonged to a former St. Louis University student.

SLU graduate Fernando Abilleira, who works for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is the deputy mission manager in charge of design and navigation.

Youth sports in St. Louis County will have more freedom at practice starting Monday.

The St. Louis Sports Medicine COVID-19 task force released its latest guidelines to area schools this week. It has approved the move from a restrictive Phase 1 into a more open Phase 2.

High school fall sports in Missouri can begin official preseason practices Monday.

While in Phase 1, youth sports teams were limited to nine players and a coach in a space large enough to allow for social distancing.
