CHICAGO — Like many high schoolers across the state, Cal Vine, 16, had to take a health class their sophomore year. Vine, who uses the pronoun they, was looking forward to the sexual education session at Carbondale Community High School.

But the class focused mainly on basic anatomy and drug use and did not address Vine’s questions about sexual identity and health.

Jeremy Maclin has been promoted.

Kirkwood High announced Monday that Maclin has been named the school's new head football coach in waiting. The hiring of Maclin, who has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for his alma mater, won’t be official until he is approved by the Kirkwood Board of Education when it meets Feb. 22.

Maclin will take over for Farrell Shelton, who announced in November he was retiring from coaching after a 31-year career, including the last six at Kirkwood.

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Mike Parson’s budget blueprint includes $1 million for schools that want to be exempted from certain state regulations.

The funding would support “innovation teams” seeking waivers from the State Board of Education to pursue initiatives to promote teacher recruitment and development, improve job training and enhance learning.

Sen. Karla Eslinger, R-Wasola, is sponsoring one of the bills that could create the School Innovation Waivers program.

NASA mission manager Fernando Abilleira, a St. Louis University grad, promised six months ago to write this bureau when the NASA spacecraft whose design and navigation he manages got close to Mars.

It has, and so he did.

Launched in late July and after a journey of about 280 million miles, Mars 2020 Perseverance will enter the Martian atmosphere on Feb. 18, Abilleira said.
