ST. LOUIS — The coronavirus pandemic will get worse before it gets better, but vaccinations “will be the real gateway” to a return to normal, Dr. Anthony Fauci told a group of Washington University scientists and students on Thursday.

Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, spoke remotely during the Washington U. School of Medicine’s “Grand Rounds” forum. The live lecture allows experts to discuss clinical problems and new research. The event was accessible to the public via YouTube.

ST. LOUIS — The Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis announced Monday they would merge starting Jan. 1.

The combined organization will be under the Mathew-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club name and location in the 4200 block of North Kingshighway.

In October, BGCSTL also announced a merger with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bethalto, which has two locations in Illinois.

This was the mantra that Angela Toczylowski’s mother, a science teacher, imprinted in her mind from an early age. The statement was more than a play on a catchy Beatles’ song, but a reminder that a methodical approach to life can be applied to everything we do.

This understanding of life and the world around her was Toczylowski’s inspiration for pursuing the field of education and the study of science herself.

After the coronavirus forced the cancellation of high school concerts and plays last spring, music and theater teachers were determined their students could still learn and perform as the pandemic stretched on.

“How do we teach performing arts online? How do we keep them engaged and interested?” said Tali Allen, director of education at the Muny. “It’s challenging but I think if there’s anything good about this, we’re all challenged together.”
