U City seventh-grader wins Missouri geography bee

A seventh-grader from Christ the King School in University City won the state-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Friday at Moberly Area Community College, the event's organizers said.

With his victory, Jackson Cooper won a $200 cash prize, the “National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World, 2nd Edition,” and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington to represent Missouri in the National Geographic Bee Championships, May 20-23.

The national bee champion will win a $50,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll. The second- and third-place finishers in the national competition will receive $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships, respectively.

Christ the King School is a Catholic for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
